FAQ
Common questions
Straight answers before you walk through the door.
How much does membership cost at 144 BJJ?
Unlimited memberships start at $130/mo for one person — $230 for two and $300 for three. See Pricing for family, military, wrestling, and drop-in options. Your first class is free.
Do I need experience or to be in shape first?
No. Most adults and kids start with zero martial arts background. Coaches scale every class. There is no mandatory sparring on day one — you learn movement, safety, and how class works first.
How often should I train when I’m starting?
Two to four classes a week is a solid start. Consistency beats intensity early on — pick a rhythm you can keep.
What does a typical class look like?
Most classes run 60–90 minutes: warm-up, technique and drilling, then optional live training (rolling) when you’re ready. Beginners are coached through the flow.
Is 144 BJJ safe for kids?
Yes. Youth classes have clear expectations, intentional partners, and careful coaching. Parents are welcome to watch and ask questions. Many families mention the community and Mat Chat lessons as much as the techniques.
What should I bring to my first class?
Wear a T-shirt and athletic shorts with no pocket zippers, bring slides or flip-flops and a water bottle, and arrive about 10 minutes early. A gi is not required on day one. Complete the short digital waiver before you step on the mats.
Where are you located?
13422 Boydton Plank Rd, Dinwiddie, VA 23841 — park in the front lot off Boydton Plank Rd. Convenient for Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Prince George, and Fort Gregg-Adams families.
How is this different from a big-box gym or MMA gym?
144 BJJ is family-owned and veteran-owned with owner-led coaching — not a chain class on loop. Beginners are coached carefully, kids are known by name, and Dinwiddie Wrestling Club trains year-round under the same roof.
Do you offer a military or first-responder rate?
Yes. Unlimited membership for military and first responders is $100/mo. First responders can also start with a $49 first-month partner offer on the First Responders page. Mention your rate when you book your free first class or call (804) 570-1677.
Can I book a free trial class?
Yes. Book online in two short steps, pick a Monday–Friday class that fits, then complete your digital waiver.
